THE NATIONAL EYE INSTITUTE SELECTS PROCESS DIRECTOR TO ADDRESS COMPLIANCE REQUIREMENTS AND KEY PROCESSES
Dynamic Workflows, Electronic Signatures and Centralized Administration Were Key Criteria

San Diego, CA – December 6, 2010 – BP Logix, developer of BPM software that accelerates time-to-value, today announced that the National Eye Institute (NEI), part of the National Institutes of Health, has selected Process Director to initially address its ethics reporting requirements.

As part of its responsibility to provide a robust IT infrastructure to support scientific research, NEI must respond to both regulatory and legislative requirements. Because the Institute is funded by taxpayers, the NEI also needs to demonstrate that it is fiscally responsible and prudent in its decision-making. Process Director is being deployed to improve the Institute’s business processes, as well as streamline its workflows, enabling the NEI to clearly improve its reporting processes and ensure compliance with federal requirements.

The National Eye Institute (NEI) was established by Congress in 1968 to protect and prolong the vision of the American people. NEI research leads to sight-saving treatments, reduces visual impairment and blindness, and improves the quality of life for people of all ages. The Institute’s vision research is supported by the NEI through approximately 1600 research grants and training awards made to scientists at more than 250 medical centers, hospitals, universities, and other institutions across the country and around the world. The NEI also conducts laboratory and patient-oriented research at its own facilities and is the lead Federal agency for the vision and hearing chapter in Healthy People 2010, the nation's blueprint to improve public health.

Like many other CIOs, Terry Williams had an ongoing requirement for better document management within the Institute, as well as a document retention process and procedure. One of the most visible sets of documents that Williams must address involves ethics reporting. “We deal with scientific people and management people – and every year we must report on any potential conflicts of interest,” Williams stated. “With scientists there can be potential conflicts of either a scientific or medical nature, whereas for management it can be the relationship with technology companies or products. Our executive officer learned about Process Director from a sister institute, NIMH. He appreciated how they handled their ethics reporting – and we decided to handle ours similarly,” observed Williams.

With a Congressional mandate regarding how money is spent, seeing how other institutes and federal agencies are addressing their ethics/conflict of interest reporting, and with new reporting requirements every year Williams pursued a solution. Ultimately he did a cost benefit analysis and selected Process Director.

BP Logix Process Director provides a robust infrastructure that enables business users to define, automate, manage and report on business processes and moves business process management (BPM) under the direct control of the users themselves: no coding is required. Process Director features one-of-a-kind Predictive BPM™ (pBPM™) and Process Timeline™ technology, leading to faster and more accurate decision-making. “The NEI needs to demonstrate compliance with a wide range of federal requirements,” stated Edward Skiko, CEO of BP Logix, Inc. “We are pleased that the Institute has embraced Process Director to address these requirements as well as its business process and workflow software needs,” he added.

“While ethics reporting represents our first process, we have lots of different kinds of documents and needs, including document disposition, initiation to final storage and retention,” stated Williams. “With Process Director in place we can consider the entire life cycle of documents and their requirements,” he concluded
